Strengthening Ecovillage Voices in Local Communities

One of the key objectives of the NGO “Network of Ecovillages of Ukraine” is to strengthen the voice of intentional communities within their surrounding municipalities.

Regular cooperation with local authorities enables communities to clearly communicate their needs and challenges, while also receiving structured feedback from governance structures. This two-way communication is essential for aligning community initiatives with local development strategies.

Building stable relationships with local authorities is critical for future regional reconstruction processes after the war. It creates a foundation for coordinated decision-making, shared responsibility, and more resilient territorial development models that integrate both civic and institutional perspectives.

Cooperation between Ecovillages and Local Authorities (2023–2024)

During 2023–2024, five ecovillages actively collaborated with local authorities to address community-level issues. The results of this cooperation can be explored through a dedicated webinar.

Ecovillages and intentional communities have more to offer to municipalities and governance structures than just the production of high-quality food. Successful cases include infrastructure development, education for children, forest protection initiatives, rehabilitation support for internally displaced persons, and the establishment of local businesses.

These examples demonstrate that ecovillages can function as practical partners in territorial development, contributing across social, ecological, and economic dimensions.

Community–Local Government Guide (Infographic Handbook)

The guide uses infographics to explain, in simple language, the fundamental concepts, relationships, rights, and responsibilities between citizens and local authorities.

It helps clarify what can realistically be expected from interaction with territorial communities and how individuals and initiatives can contribute to improving this cooperation.

The handbook is designed as a practical orientation tool for understanding local governance dynamics and supporting more effective civic engagement within community structures.

Dialogue with the Head of the Oleksiivska Community

The dialogue with the head of the Oleksiivska territorial community highlights important aspects of both the opportunities and the necessity of cooperation between territorial communities, intentional communities, and NGOs.

It demonstrates that effective collaboration can become a practical mechanism for addressing local challenges, aligning priorities, and building shared solutions at the community level.

Project Support and Partnerships

All of the above activities were made possible through the project “LEVEL UP – GENerating Change”, implemented in partnership with the Danish Ecovillage Network Landsforeningen for Økosamfund and with financial support from the Association of Civil Society Organisations “Civil Society in Development” CISU – Civilsamfund i Udvikling.

The project created an enabling framework for strengthening cooperation between communities, local authorities, and civil society organizations, supporting practical change-oriented initiatives and cross-sector collaboration.
